Most max heart rate formulas ask for one thing: age. The Nikolaidis max heart rate formula asks for four. Age, body weight, VO2 max, and resting heart rate all factor into the estimate, which raises an obvious question — does more input data actually produce a better number, or just a more complicated one?
The honest answer is: it depends on what those extra numbers are actually measuring.
The Formula Itself
MHR = 211 − (0.64 × Age) + (0.72 × Weight in kg) + (0.06 × VO2 max) − (0.48 × Resting Heart Rate)

Weight and VO2 max both push the estimate up.
Resting heart rate pulls it back down — a lower resting heart rate, generally a marker of better cardiovascular fitness, nudges the estimated max heart rate higher.
Worked Example
An athlete who is:
45 years old,
weighs 79 kg,
has a VO2 max of 45 ml/kg/min,
and a resting heart rate of 55 bpm would calculate as follows:
211 − (0.64 × 45) + (0.72 × 79) + (0.06 × 45) − (0.48 × 55) 211 − 28.8 + 56.88 + 2.7 − 26.4 = 215.38, rounded to 215 bpm
Change any one input and the number moves. Raise VO2 max to 55 with everything else held constant, and the estimate climbs to about 216 bpm. Lower resting heart rate to 45, and it climbs further still. That sensitivity is the entire point of a multi-variable formula — and also, as covered below, part of its risk.
From Estimate to Zones
Once a max heart rate figure is set, it gets divided into five percentage-based training zones.
Zone 1 (50–60% of MHR): Recovery, warm-ups, cooldowns, and easy aerobic movement.
Zone 2 (60–70% of MHR): Aerobic endurance — base-building rides and long runs.
Zone 3 (70–80% of MHR): Tempo work and steady, moderate race-specific effort.
Zone 4 (80–90% of MHR): Threshold training and sustained, controlled hard efforts.
Zone 5 (90–100% of MHR): VO2 max intervals and short, high-intensity repeats.
At 215 bpm, Zone 2 lands between roughly 129 and 151 bpm, and Zone 4 between roughly 172 and 194 bpm. Every zone shifts if any one of the four inputs changes, which is worth remembering the next time VO2 max gets retested or resting heart rate drops after a block of consistent training.
Advantages & Drawbacks
Advantages: The formula incorporates fitness markers, not just a birth year, which means two athletes of the same age can land on meaningfully different estimates. Resting heart rate is easy to track at home and tends to improve with training, giving the formula a built-in way to reflect rising fitness over a season. VO2 max, when it comes from a real test rather than a guess, adds a genuine physiological data point instead of a population average. For athletes who already track these numbers, the formula puts existing data to use rather than asking for something new.
Drawbacks: The formula is only as accurate as its inputs, and VO2 max in particular is often estimated rather than lab-tested, which means error can compound across four variables instead of just one. It's considerably more complex to calculate and re-run than a single-variable formula, and small mistakes in unit entry — pounds instead of kilograms, for instance — produce a distorted result. It doesn't account for medications that affect heart rate, and like most formulas in this category, it doesn't distinguish between sport-specific max heart rate differences. And because the formula is more sensitive to input changes, a single bad or outdated number can throw the whole estimate off further than it would with a simpler equation.
Why the Number Still Matters
None of that makes the formula useless — it makes it conditional. The output is only as trustworthy as the weakest input behind it. An athlete training off a stale VO2 max test from two years ago is training off outdated math, regardless of how sound the formula is.
For triathletes, that matters across three disciplines at once. A number that's off by even a few beats can shift Zone 2 rides into borderline Zone 3 effort, or blunt threshold sessions that were supposed to hurt.
