Triathlon Taper Calculator: How Much to Cut Swim, Bike and Run Before Race Day

You have completed the long rides, accumulated the run miles and spent months building fitness in the pool.
Now comes one of the hardest parts of triathlon training: doing less.
Many triathletes taper by feel. They reach the final two weeks and start guessing—a shorter ride here, a skipped run there and perhaps an extra rest day because it “feels right.”
The problem is that swimming, cycling and running do not create fatigue in the same way. Cutting every discipline by the same percentage can leave you tired in one sport and flat in another.
Why a Flat 30% Reduction Doesn’t Work
A generic taper treats all three sports as though they carry the same physical cost.
They do not.
Running creates the most impact. Every stride loads the calves, Achilles tendons, knees and hips. Aerobic fitness holds up well with less running, but accumulated connective-tissue fatigue can follow you directly to the starting line.
Cycling creates muscular fatigue without the same impact. Long rides and hard efforts tax the quadriceps, glutes and hamstrings, so bike volume should decline—but usually not as aggressively as running.
Swimming is almost impact-free but highly technical. Cut swimming too much and you may lose your feel for the water, stroke timing and efficiency.
That is why the calculator reduces:
Swimming the least
Cycling at the baseline rate
Running the most
The objective is to shed fatigue without losing rhythm, confidence or race-specific sharpness.
What the Calculator Needs From You
The calculator uses four inputs.
Race distance
Race distance determines the starting taper length:
Sprint: one week
Olympic: one week
Half distance: two weeks
Full distance: three weeks
Longer races generally require more peak training volume and create deeper accumulated fatigue.
Peak weekly training hours
Use the largest training week you actually completed and absorbed.
Do not enter the biggest week printed on your training plan or the volume you hoped to reach. Tapering from an inflated number can leave you doing too much during the final weeks.
If the plan called for 14 hours but your biggest completed week was 11, enter 11.
Discipline split
Enter the percentage of your peak week spent swimming, cycling and running. The three percentages should total 100%.
For example:
Swim: 20%
Bike: 50%
Run: 30%
Weeks remaining
Count race week itself. This tells the calculator whether you have enough time for a complete taper or need a compressed version.
Example: Full Distance With a 12-Hour Peak Week
Consider an athlete with:
Eight weeks until a full-distance triathlon
A 12-hour peak training week
20% swimming, 50% cycling and 30% running
A full-distance race uses a three-week taper. The remaining five weeks stay at maintenance volume before the taper begins.
Here is the discipline-adjusted result:

Notice how run volume declines faster than swimming. That is intentional.
The athlete continues swimming often enough to preserve water feel while receiving more relief from running’s accumulated impact.
What If You Don’t Have Enough Time?
An injury interruption or a schedule change may leave fewer weeks than the recommended taper length.
In that situation, the calculator creates a compressed taper.
Instead of shrinking the entire curve, it prioritizes the portion closest to race day. Those final days provide the last opportunity to reduce acute fatigue before the race.
Running still receives the largest reduction because cutting impact is one of the fastest ways to help tired legs recover without sacrificing the aerobic fitness already built.
A compressed taper is not ideal, but it is better than guessing—or trying to squeeze missed training into race week.
Should You Remove All Intensity?
No. A taper reduces training volume, not necessarily every trace of intensity.
Short, controlled race-pace efforts can preserve coordination, leg speed and confidence. What should disappear is the prolonged work that creates deep fatigue.
You should finish race-week sessions feeling activated, not tested.
Research on endurance athletes generally supports reducing training volume while retaining some intensity and maintaining adequate training frequency. One meta-analysis found that a progressive taper can improve endurance performance, although the ideal duration and reduction vary by athlete and event. Review the taper research on PubMed.
Avoid These Common Taper Mistakes
Trying to make up missed training
Completing one last long run or ride
Cutting swimming frequency too sharply
Testing new shoes, equipment or nutrition
Filling reduced training time with extra life stress
Interpreting restless legs as lost fitness
You cannot build meaningful new fitness during race week—but you can carry unnecessary fatigue into the race.
Taper From the Training You Actually Completed
Your peak week is the largest volume you successfully trained and recovered from—not the largest number written on your schedule.
That distinction determines whether your taper matches your actual preparation.
The work has already been done. The final weeks are about letting that work show up on race day.
